Advancing AI for Construction – VMTKC Research Collaboration

WatchBuilt has joined Latvia’s Smart Materials and Technology Competence Centre program to advance AI-based automation for construction progress tracking and as-built BIM generation.

WatchBuilt is proud to join the latest phase of the “Viedo materiālu un tehnoloģiju kompetences centrs” (Smart Materials and Technology Competence Centre) program in Latvia—a national initiative that supports applied industrial research and development. This program connects leading technology companies and research institutions to develop innovative solutions with real-world application potential.

As part of this collaboration, WatchBuilt will focus on advancing the scientific and technological foundations of its automated construction tracking platform. The project aims to improve how reality capture data—such as point clouds from construction sites—can be more intelligently interpreted and compared to BIM models. Emphasis will be placed on developing new AI-driven algorithms that increase the accuracy, automation, and usability of as-built model generation across different stages of construction.

Participation in this program will also allow WatchBuilt to work more closely with Latvia’s academic community, accelerating knowledge transfer and aligning our solution with state-of-the-art research in computer vision, materials, and digital construction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly does WatchBuilt do?

WatchBuilt automates the comparison between your BIM model and the reality on site. We handle data collection using our own hardware and provide regular, visual progress updates, as-built reports, and clash alerts—without disrupting construction workflows.

Do we need to operate the scanner ourselves?

No. Currently, WatchBuilt includes scanning as a service. Our team performs regular on-site scans based on a pre-agreed schedule to ensure data quality and ease of use.

What kind of hardware is used?

We use a custom-built LiDAR-based scanner designed specifically for construction environments. It’s optimized for fast, construction-grade accuracy and seamless integration with our software platform.

How accurate is your system?

Our hardware provides accuracy levels suitable for construction progress tracking and deviation detection. It’s not millimeter-perfect like high-end survey tools, but it’s optimized for cost-effective, real-world monitoring.

Can WatchBuilt integrate with our existing BIM tools?

Yes. Our platform works with standard openBIM formats (IFC), making it easy to integrate with your existing BIM workflows.

Who owns the data?

You do. All project data—scans, reports, and BIM outputs—remain under your control. WatchBuilt only processes and stores it to deliver the agreed services.

How often is the progress updated?

It depends on your project needs. Some projects are scanned weekly, others daily. The frequency is agreed at the start of each pilot.

What types of projects is WatchBuilt best suited for?

Our solution is ideal for commercial, industrial, or infrastructure projects where regular site verification is essential. We’re currently working with projects at various stages—from structural work to internal fit-out.

What’s required to join the pilot program?

Just interest and openness to collaboration. We’ll discuss your project scope and timeline, and determine how WatchBuilt can be implemented with minimal disruption.
